Resilience and Renewal: the Cattle Herders of Kazakhstan
Created in partnership with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), this project documents the lives of cattle herders and farmers across Kazakhstan during the depths of winter, where temperatures can fall below -30°C and daily life continues across vast, frozen landscapes.
Through a series of environmental portraits, the work explores a way of life deeply rooted in tradition, highlighting the resilience, heritage and daily labour that sustain communities in some of the region’s harshest conditions.
The project was undertaken during a period of significant transformation within Kazakhstan’s agricultural sector. Both beef and dairy production have expanded in response to growing domestic demand and wider economic development. As the country strengthens its ambitions around food security and export capacity, the images offer a human perspective on the people sustaining that growth and quietly shaping the future of the industry from the ground up.
